What is this movie about?
“Crazy Rich Asians” is about a girl, Rachel Chu, and her boyfriend Nick Young who are traveling to Singapore for a friend’s wedding. When they got on the plane, Rachel was shocked because Nick booked a first-class seat. Rachel doesn’t know that Nick can afford a first-class seat. When she asks Nick about it, Nick admits that his family is wealthy. He seems like he doesn’t want to talk about it and assures Rachel that his family will love her.
After they arrive, Rachel visits her college roommate, Goh Peik Lin. She was having a meal with Goh Peik Lin’s family when Peik Lin’s family revealed that Nick’s family is extremely wealthy. Nick’s family also owns almost all of the buildings in Singapore. Because Rachel is meeting Nick’s family after this, Peik Lin helps Rachel pick out an appropriate dress for the event. Peik Lin also drives her to Young’s family house for the dinner party.
Disapproval of Rachel’s American identity by Nick’s mother, Rachel felt awkward. Expecting her to come from a healthy family, Nick’s cousin asked her while judging her. A few days later, Rachel was invited to Araminta’s bachelorette party. People accused her of being a gold digger. As she leaves, Rachel overhears the other women criticizing her looks as well, and discovers a dead fish in her hotel room bed, along with a hateful message. There’s only one person who’s treating her kindly, which is Nick’s closest cousin, Astrid Teo.
Rating and reviews
The movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” is rated 4.5 on Google. On the website Rotten Tomatoes, a top critic, Michael Sragow, stated, “A binge-able series might have been a better way to go since the script squeezes a sprawling supporting cast into boisterous caricatures and transforms an intricate flow chart of status among Singapore’s superrich into a flood of affectations.”
Overall, the movie has so many positive reviews, but different people have different tastes. One of the reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, “The movie is average but very cringe-worthy. Also, I didn’t understand why Mandarin-speaking characters speak English when they’re alone… It’s a shame it wasn’t more authentic, I was hoping to learn a little more about the culture and language, even if it’s a comedy… I will not watch it again,” said Einat H.
